Jugal Hansraj: I Signed About 30-40 Films But They Never Took Off
In an interview with Hindustan Times, Masoom and Mohabbatein actor Jugal Hansraj has also shed light on the same. He spoke about his journey as an actor and how he lost over 30-40 films in his career. Talking about his journey first, Hansraj said, "I wasn't from the film business. I'm a complete outsider and I have no connection in the film industry from any side. So, obviously you're a little unsure." He added. "You're constantly finding your feet, you don't have someone to advice you. I feel, you're equipped to make smarter career decisions if you come from a film family. I've enjoyed working. Despite coming from a non film background, I did pretty okay. I'm still remembered. I didn't trouble anyone I worked with, I was professional and people still stay in touch with me." He then talked about the flip side of the business and how he began losing films. "I signed my first film as an adult in 1989 for Manmohan Desai, which was my comeback into acting but it never started and throughout my career, that has happened a lot. Till today, about 35 to 40 of the projects that I signed, never took off. In the last 30 years, that's really a lot," the actor stated. He continued, "I'd have done a lot more work, but it didn't start. It's not like I was not interested but what can one do if movies got shelved? I wish they started." The actor is best known for being the child actor in Shekhar Kapoor's timeless classic Masoom. He has acted in films like Papa Kehte Hain, Mohabbatein, and Kahaani 2 in his career. He has also directed two films for Yash Raj Films, the animated comedy Roadside Romeo in 2008, and Pyaar Impossible in 2010! https://www.mid-day.com/articles/jugal-hansraj-i-signed-about-30-40-films-but-they-never-took-off/22904241?from=home-p1
Farah Khan: “We weren’t supposed to know Aishwarya was SRK’s imagination!”
Aditya Chopra’s blockbuster romantic film ‘Mohabbatein’, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan completes its 20th year today and the film’s choreographer Farah Khan opened up about how she creatively captured the essence of this love story for ages through her dance routines. Farah reveals that the fact that Aishwarya was a figment of SRK’s imagination was kept a well-guarded secret! “We were not supposed to know, at that point, whether Aishwarya was Shah Rukh’s imagination or not. He would see her in places and she was the spirit behind the love stories. We shot in London. We shot in freezing cold nights with rain and we went to Switzerland to shoot two songs, Humko Humise Chura Lo, which I think is one of the best songs in the film, really beautifully done,” she says. Farah reveals how the legendary film-maker Yash Chopra was assisting his son in ‘Mohabbatein’. “I know Yashji used to be there on all the songs, assisting Adi. Very sweetly he would be holding the fog machine and kind of put the fog at exactly the time it was needed. I’ve never seen someone physically do it, I know that was one time I couldn’t yell at the fog machine person because Yashji was doing it, and he was doing a rather good job with it. So, it’s one of my cherished memories and experiences working on Mohabbatein,” she reveals. Farah fondly cherishes her creative association with Aditya Chopra. She says, “Adi of course, as I think everyone knows, is very, very organized. He used to make me feel guilty and I used to think I’m one of the most hardworking people there. In fact, even during lunchbreak, we would all be having lunch and Adi would be walking around thinking about how the next shot is going to be. I’ve never seen him take a lunchbreak.” Farah reveals how SRK was a pro to pick up her choreography with utmost ease. “With Shahrukh I had done tons of movies by then. So, all these kids (Uday Chopra, Shamita Shetty, Jimmy Shergill, Preeti Jhangiani, Kim Sharma and Jugal Hansraj) would do two to three months of rehearsals. And then, Shah Rukh would come and he would learn it in like five minutes because he never comes for rehearsals and he would just learn the steps in five minutes, and that was the amazing part of it!” About Aishwarya, Farah says, “Ash being a thorough professional, freezing in London, wearing a white lace saree, drenched, and she would not complain. Her and Shah Rukh’s chemistry is something else in the film and that whole poetry of Ek Ladki Thi Deewani Si I think that has become almost iconic because of how they did it.”
Heroes who failed early in their career - Aftab, Rahul Roy, Jugal Hansraj to name a few - how do they survive? Obviously they can't go back to normal day jobs and as far as I know, they don't belong to big families who can support them. How do they survive? We do have some industry insiders here. Hope they can throw some light on this. Most of the failed actresses get married to a rich guy, so that's that.
https://youtu.be/zXLgYBSdv74 Dear Sushant, I first watched you on the first promo of Pavitra Rishta and I thought you were not pretty like other TV actors I was used to seeing (I was a thirteen year old and my definition of good looking were QSQT Aamir Khan, Jugal Hansraj, Pre-Kaminey Shahid Kapoor). Then I watched you in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa and I don't remember now why, but you were my favorite contestant in the show. Then when Kai Po Chhe was released, everyone was hyped for Rajkumar Rao and I too was more curious because he was acclaimed then. But even during the music release, I had a feeling that I will root for you more than RKR. Then I watched Byomkesh Bakshi and it was the last thing to convince me that you were the best among the new lot and you were going a long way. Then when I first watched Ik Vaari Aa on the music channel, I was amazed how you light up the screen with that cute smile. You were really cute in that song and the song is still now my most favorite song. Raabta flopped but I still had hopes that if Bollywood will ever make a movie with a Software Engineer in a 9-5 job in Bangalore as the main character, no one except you could play that character to perfection. There are many Engineering graduates in Bollywood but I don't know why I related most with you as an Engineer...maybe because I too loved Physics back in 12th. I was waiting for your Dil Bechara and you know, you were my favorite actor and I was finally waiting for you to get all the success you deserved. Dude! Now I can't even listen to the song which made me happy even during a dark day without feeling sad. From all your fans, Ik Vaari Aa Bhi Ja Yaara Ik Vaari Aa Raah Takoon Main Bechara Ik Vaari Aa
Watched Mohabbatein for the first time last night. I went into it thinking that it would be a cringe-fest in the level of the SOTY films, but ended up getting pleasantly surprised.
Admittedly, it's a bit weird how I never watched the movie despite being a 90s kid and constantly seeing the songs or clips from the movie on TV. My interest got piqued when somebody on this sub mentioned that Mohabbatein was supposed to be an adaptation of Dead Poets Society, and thus, I decided to finally watch it just to have a laugh. SRK, Amitabh Bachchan and the soundtrack of course elevate the film to another level altogether, but even without them, it is still pretty watchable. Don't get me wrong - the film has its flaws. The writing's pretty awful at times, some of the acting is really bad (especially Jugal Hansraj, despite his unbelievably good looks) and there's that reliance on the irritating Anupam Kher, Archana Puran Singh side characters that seems to have become a trope in movies from the 90s and early 2000s. But despite all that, the movie manages to work far better than those which we are supposed to call "family" films in recent times. Now, I don't really have an idea about which films do well at the box office (for a long time, I used to think Lakshya had been a hit), but surely a Mohabbatein type of a film would still do pretty well in the BO today, wouldn't it? Mohabbatein was pretty Americanized as well, but it still felt like a Bollywood movie. I don't know what to say about today's counterparts to Mohabbatein though. Edit - Forgot to mention that Jimmy Shergill of course does a fine job here as well. This was one of his earliest films and he was still as good then as he is now. Tragically underrated this guy.
